Tile & Grout Cleaning

To clean and maintain the tile flooring in your home one must understand the tile composition and type of tile to which they are cleaning.

There are many different types of tiles such as ceramic, porcelain, terra cotta, and saltillo. These types of tiles are usually made up of clay that when manufactured are either baked at low temperatures or in the case of porcelain, fired at very high temperatures. This helps to better maintain their durability. This variance in the temperature treatment relates to the difference in the water-resistance of the tile. Some tile with a low resistance to water will retain some moisture and stains. Others like ones that have been fired at longer temperatures will be more water-resistant and stain-resistant. Which in return are often easier to clean and maintain. Tiles that are less water-resistant often have to be resealed every year.

Stone tiles are comprised of materials like marble, slate, granite, and limestone. When manufactured their finish is polished, tumbled or rough. Stone tiles absorb stains no matter the finish. Although stone tiles are easier to clean and maintain. It's because of its low stain resistance that a sealer should often be applied to the floor.

Grout lines tend to retain soil a lot faster than the tile itself. Because grout lines are often sunk down below the tile. Water containing dirt and soil to the lowest point, which is often the grout line.

To better clean these areas an understanding of which cleaning process will achieve the best results is key. Simply mopping is not enough to clean and brighten grout lines. One must use the proper application of the appropriate chemical. This is followed by an agitation of the grout with the use of a brush, either manually or mechanically. Vacuum removal of the soiled solution is key. This process is followed by a thorough rinsing of the floor and letting it air dry.

Together all of these processes combined with an understanding of which type of tile is being cleaned can help to maintain the beauty of your tiles for a long time.
